What is Maca?

Maca has been used for thousands of years by the people of the Andes as a staple food. Its ability to grow at elevations between 4,000 m (13,123 ft) and 4,500 m (14,764 ft) makes this plant so special. It thrives there because the extreme environment (freezing temperatures, hard sunlight, constant high winds) favours those plants that reside mostly underground, hence Maca and papas (commonly known as potatoes).

Nutritional Composition Traditionally, Maca has been used as a food source. Being one of the few plants that grow so high in elevation while also being so nourishing for the body, it makes sense that this was eaten in multiple dishes and ways throughout the day. It contains an abnormally high nutrient profile for being an edible tuber. These three data sets are from 1960 but are still valid. Unlike carrots, turnips, and potatoes with a low density of nutrients, dried Maca is more akin to seeds and cereals such as maize and rice. It contains more amino acids than carrots and potatoes and is higher in healthy fats than most roots.

Maca is typically dried to a powder or flour and used as a root vegetable or in traditional medicine. Its Spanish and Quechua names include Maca-maca, Maino, Ayak Chichira, and Ayak Willku. The major Maca cultivating provinces of China is Yunnan, Xizang, Xinjiang etc.

The average composition is 60-75% carbohydrates, 10-14% protein, 8.5% dietary fiber, and 2.2% fats. Maca is rich in the dietary minerals calcium and potassium (with low content of sodium), and contains the essential trace elements iron, iodine, copper, manganese, and zinc, as well as fatty acids including linolenic acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acids, and 19 amino acids.

Maca powder is a relatively inexpensive bulk commodity, much like wheat flour or potato flour. The supplement industry uses both the dry roots and maca flour for different types of processing and concentrated extracts.
