Amygdalin, also known as laevomandelonitrile or laetrile, is isolated from the seeds of the tree Prunus dulcis, also known as bitter almonds. Since the early 1950s, a modified form of amygdalin has been promoted under the names laetrile and "Vitamin B17" as a cancer cure. In reality, neither amygdalin nor any derivative such as laetrile is in any sense a vitamin.
Amygdalin (from the Greek word "almond"), is a toxic cyanoside found in many plants, but most notably in the seeds of apricots, almonds, apples, peaches, and plums. Amygdalin is also found in other plum plants, including apricots and black cherries, as well as in the leaves, fruits and pits of loquat.
Amygdalin, also known as vitamin B17, is a common cyanogenic glycoside and the active ingredient in the traditional Chinese medicine bitter almond, which is a derivative of α-hydroxynitrile, and has become a common expectorant and cough suppressant and adjuvant anti-cancer drug in medicine. Amygdalin is widely found in the seed kernels of loquat, apricot, peach, plum, prune, and other plants.Bitter amygdalin is composed of two molecules of glucose and one molecule of amygdalinitrile. Bitter almonds have a bitter taste and are mostly used for medicinal purposes, and are also known as the "fruit of cancer prevention".


Amygdalin was first isolated in 1830 and was used as an anticancer agent in Russia as early as It is believed that laetrile relieves the pain of cancer. One theory is that cancer cells contain large quantities of the enzyme beta-glucosidase. This enzyme breaks the amygdalin down and releases cyanide, a toxic chemical that then kills cancer cells.
